Mahishasur Mardini Dance : The win over Evil

Most Attractive Performance of Bidar Utsav
By Krishna Dance Group From Orissa

Sare Jahanse Aacha Hindustan Hamara, a dance programme presented by the Prince Dance Group from Berhampur in Orissa stole the show at the Bidar Utsav, which began here on Saturday. The organisers of the three-day extravaganza have invited several cultural groups and teams to perform.

The tribal group consisting of construction labourers won over the hearts of the audience the moment it took the stage. The dance programme impressed one and all. Their first item was based on a collage of patriotic songs, including Vande Mataram, Ma Tujhe Salam and some Oriya songs.

The 21-member team had been divided into three groups. Members of all the groups had been painted from head to toe with the tricolour. It looked as though the national flag was waving on the stage as they danced. The acrobatics displayed by the dancers conveyed different meanings to the song and music. The second item was based on the incarnation of Krishna, beginning with the preaching of Gita. The three groups formed different designs to depict arrows and bows and so on.

Team leader Krishna Mohan told The Hindu that his group had received accolades after it won a prize in a television reality show. “We were construction labourers trying to find a common pastime. Choreographer Krishna Reddy taught us this fusion dance. We started learning this art only to seek some relief after the day's hard work. Now, we are happy that people are enjoying our show,” he said. Deputy Commissioner Sri Sameer Shukla felicitated the team.

“The Orissa team has shown that there is no need for additional resources or sophisticated training for a cultural performance. Passion for art is all what is required,” said dance teacher S. Bhagyajyoti
